Week 2 Day 5

When it came to making my final piece I still wasn’t completely sure how exactly I wanted the whole piece to be put together so I decided to work with calico instead and focus on the shape of the garment with rather than the print as I had already practised it enough in my book, also I was my first time make shorts bottoms so I wasn’t sure if things will go wrong in the making. Nonetheless when making the piece I did in fact have a few issues when making the shorts with the crotch area being too short, so if I were to do it again making the crotch part of the bottoms longer would be my priority, but other than that I really like the look of the overall structure of the garment and felt that when adding the digital print and the see through material it would be a very interesting outfit as a whole with print over-powering but also complementing the rest of the piece.

Week 2 Day 2

For my final piece I wanted to combine my digital print which I was working upon in the previous week to my final line up. By doing this I was practicing upon how I could display the patterns and where would be the most effective place to place it so I would worked a lot with Photoshop and mixed the patterns around and until I was completely happy with where I had placed the prints. When working with my designs I wanted to work with see through plastic fabric as well as digital print. I wanted to add this to my design as I want to show that even though society is full of ethnical stereotypes and prejudice we still choice to act completely oblivious to the issues, trying to cover up our ignorance even though it’s easy to find out about a person as an individual if we tried hard enough, but we simply judge a race by their given label whether its positive or negative we still try to tick it off as okay saying things like ‘well it’s a compliment’ or ‘I didn’t know, it’s not my thought’, ‘you’re a really good dancer for a white person’. Thinking that if we quote are statements like this it makes it somehow okay because we just didn’t know or maybe we just don’t care to know so we pretend the information isn’t there.

Week 1 Day 2

Politics

For this week our project was based around politics where we had to come up with a topic that most interested us on the grounds of everyday issues in the world. For my chosen topic I picked ethnical stereotypes as I found it interesting how we as society prejudice people simply upon race and if we happen to see a person acting in a way that fits their stereotype we would immediately place a majority within that category through just a single person or a small group of people. For this project I wanted to focus upon digital print as I felt that it really suited this theme and I felt that it could really show off the issue in a more playful but straightforward way rather than hiding the meaning with an exaggerated outcome. When beginning my project I looked into a particular photographer that took random people on the street and had them write answers to everyday questions that society thinks but would never say or would say in ignorance. I found this style of work very interesting and thought it would be a great idea to add into my work, so I decided to build up answers that could generally be questioned amongst people and building it up so it appears as a collage. By doing this I used Photoshop and picked put a font that I thought would stand out but has this kind of urban appearance to it; also keeping it black and white to add to the affect of the theme of ethnicity and the colours black and white being what represents race globally.

During the week I worked upon another pattern, this time I drew it; working around cartoons. I based my inspiration around images which I have seen in children’s shows and have shown how ethnical stereotypes can be shown within this through the use of exaggerated facial features or the way the characters behaviour which places them within their prejudiced groups. Again I wanted to stick with the colours of black and white and making the drawings as simple as possible but still displaying a strong meaning showing how we are brought up from a young age to prejudice as it is what we see by the media, and if we have no idea of a particular race personally and all we see of that race is what is presented on the TV then we will think that everyone in that race acts that way.

Week 1 Day 4

Illustration

For this week we worked upon a fashion illustration tutorial which was held for two days. The Archive gallery also helped with finding new styles of illustrating through a lot of unfinished work and scribbles. For me I found this project/tutorial very exciting as drawing is one of my strong points however it also allowed me to ease up on my drawing skill and increase my knowledge upon know other methods of drawing and adding multiples of different elements to my illustrations such as paint, ink, pen, pencil, pastels, and so on. During the two days we focused on line drawing, blind drawing, storytelling into drawing etc. I do have to admit that in the beginning I struggled a lot when it came to the illustration as I was very mush used to neat and well proportioned illustrations as it was how I taught myself to draw and it was the way I was always encouraged to draw like so change my method of drawing and embracing new methods of drawing was extremely difficult for me but towards the end I felt that I did start to loosen up a little more. Nonetheless I feel like there’s many other methods of fashion illustration that I still haven’t come to grasps with yet and I hope to experiment with these in to the future to be able to find a way of illustration that works for me but at the same time is also exciting and has a story to it so I can keep getting better at it.
